Kennesaw, GA

鈥淭here was a club for each of my interests.”

Talen, about GWU’s 60+ clubs and organizations

Talen Francis knew she wanted to play lacrosse here at 澳门六合彩高手, so she made it happen. While on the field, she has scored 123 goals for the Women鈥檚 Lacrosse team. Even though Talen is an Athletic Bulldog, she鈥檚 been successful in more areas than just sports. She is double majoring in Political Science and Psychology with an interdisciplinary minor of Sociology and Psychology. After graduation, Talen plans to attend law school in Georgia.

鈥淕WU offers you a unique opportunity to expand in multiple areas of yourself,鈥 Talen said. 鈥淚 am a much more confident person now than I was when I got here.鈥 She decided the join SGA (Student Government Association), and she was surrounded by ambitious and driven people. The SGA members 鈥渢aught me not to limit myself and how to go after my goals.鈥

Talen continues to meet more people and get even more involved. In addition to being part of SGA for three years, she served as President for SAAC (Student Athlete Advisory Committee), BSA (Black Student Association), and the Pre-Law Society.

She stays involved, even with a busy sport schedule. She鈥檚 participated in volunteer trips with Women鈥檚 Lacrosse, SAAC fundraisers, and in GWU鈥檚 5K Race to End Racism. Talen most definitely takes advantage of GWU鈥檚 athletic events as well. She loves supporting her fellow Bulldogs at basketball, football, tennis, soccer, and baseball games.

To incoming freshmen, Talen says, 鈥淐ollege is a special opportunity that not everyone gets to experience. Don鈥檛 waste your time in your room. Get out and experience what the campus has to offer.鈥

GWU is full of all types of Bulldogs, some like Talen. No matter your interests, you鈥檒l find a club or team that shares your interests!

鈥淕WU felt homey. I came for a visit and I knew it鈥檚 where God had called me.鈥

Sarah W.

Sarah Walker, 鈥23, is a Graphic Design major at GWU who is also passionate about leading others to Christ. During high school, Sarah was part of the yearbook team and wanted to continue her education that would carve her way to a career within that industry. She also saw herself being involved in the mission field in her future. At 澳门六合彩高手, she鈥檚 on that path, hoping to explore her interest in graphic design and use it in ministry.

Because of Sarah鈥檚 passion for ministry, she loves being around people and making them laugh. Sarah was involved in FOCUS (The Fellowship of Christians United in Service), which consists of teams of students and leaders that meet weekly to plan service projects, Bible studies, retreats, and times of worship.

During her freshman year, Sarah became a FOCUS member, and sophomore year, she took a big step out of her comfort zone 鈥 she became a FOCUS leader. 鈥淚t changed me for the better,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t allowed me to make personal and genuine connections with people that were centered around Christ. Being a leader helped me grow in leadership but also furthered my relationship with Christ. I wouldn鈥檛 trade that opportunity for the world!鈥 She is also actively involved in women鈥檚 ministry opportunities.

Selfless Bulldog

Greenville, SC

Michael Causey, 鈥23, chose to attend 澳门六合彩高手 University because 鈥渋t felt like it could quickly become a home away from home.鈥 He is a double major in Sport Management and Communication Studies with a double minor in Discipleship Studies and Spanish. Later Michael plans to earn his master鈥檚 degree in Sport Management and wants to become a Sports Information Director at a mid-major division I college.

As a Selfless Bulldog, Michael is heavily involved in the student life at 澳门六合彩高手. He is gaining experience while working in the athletic media relations department, showing potential GWU students around campus as an SRA (Student Recruitment Ambassador) in the admissions office, practicing service learning in the Honors Program, and serving as a YoungLife leader at Shelby Middle School for campus ministries.

Michael describes himself as caring, personable, and hardworking. He said, 鈥淚 am always looking to help people that I come across and am always looking for ways to relate to people from our first interaction.鈥 This is one reason why he appreciates the 13:1 student-faculty ratio. When deciding on a college, he was interested in forming relationships with GWU faculty due to the small class sizes.

You are probably wondering when Michael has time to study or see his friends, but while he鈥檚 been at 澳门六合彩高手, he鈥檚 become an expert in time maximization. 鈥淚 am very involved with a lot of things on and off campus while also wanting to have time to hang out with my friends,鈥 Michael shared. 鈥淭his leads me to needing to be very meaningful with my time.鈥 While juggling schoolwork, his campus job, and other commitments, he still finds time to play Mario Kart and watch TV with his roommates.

One of Michael鈥檚 favorite GWU off-campus events is new-release movie night at The Big E in Gaffney, SC. Student Activities arranges for movies and bowling free for 澳门六合彩高手 students at the entertainment center, which also has an arcade, rope course, laser tag, and mini golf. During both semesters of finals week, you鈥檒l probably see Michael in the Caf with hundreds of other students playing Pancake Bingo. This is a time for students to get their minds off exams and have fun with friends while eating too many pancakes and competing in bingo games for high-dollar prizes. Just like Michael, you鈥檒l find your niche at 澳门六合彩高手. There鈥檚 something for everyone in our loving, tight-night community of Bulldog Nation.

In one word, Malik Stewart, 鈥21, described GWU as 鈥渋nvigorating.鈥 This Dedicated Bulldog had big dreams to attend Georgetown University after graduation, and thanks to his hard work and encouraging faculty at 澳门六合彩高手, it was all made possible. At 澳门六合彩高手, he was a double major in Biology (Biomedical Sciences) and Chemistry while also part of the Cheerleading team, HSA (Honors Student Association), and LEAP (Learning, Enrichment and Assistance Program) tutoring.

鈥淏efore coming to GWU, I felt that I was lacking in some skills. I didn鈥檛 think that I was going to be successful enough to get into a university as prestigious as Georgetown,鈥 Malik shared. 鈥淣ow I can confidently say that I am sure that I will be a great scientist.鈥

Malik was not only dedicated in his studies but also in his connections he made while living on campus. He said, 鈥淥ne of the most influential aspects on my college experience was being able to walk around campus and have the ability to have a conversation with anyone.鈥

澳门六合彩高手鈥檚 close-knit campus drew him in. He said that while visiting campus, 鈥淚 remember my tour guide passing other students and everyone knew who she was. Seeing this made 澳门六合彩高手 seem more like a home than a college.鈥

The greatest piece of advice Malik says he has to offer is that you should always set extremely high, yet realistic goals for yourself, especially when it comes to considering graduate school. 鈥淭he love of a specific field that a student has will become evident through a [graduate school] application, even if an interview is not required.鈥 The passion you have for a subject or career field will prove your dedication to getting there.

You can find your home here at GWU like Malik did. Are you ready to become a Runnin鈥 Bulldog?

She has lived in various cities over the United States, including Boiling Springs, North Carolina, when she decided to attend 澳门六合彩高手 University. Lindsay earned her bachelor鈥檚 degree in International Business with a double minor in Spanish and Marketing. Now she鈥檚 in Norway attending the Norwegian School of Economics. As a member of the women鈥檚 golf team, SAAC (Student Athlete Advisory Committee), Athletic Leadership Development Program, College Democrats, , and Pre-Law Society, she kept busy but remained immersed in all areas.

While at 澳门六合彩高手, Lindsay studied abroad in Costa Rica with the Spanish program. Chemistry major Hannah Canipe, 鈥22, spent her summer in Withrow Hall鈥檚 science labs either conducting experiments or serving as a teaching assistant (TA) for organic chemistry classes. As an Academic Bulldog, Hannah stayed at 澳门六合彩高手 for five weeks of her summer for the Summer Research Scholars Program, studying hair and skincare products with mentoring faculty, Dr. Totten.

Hannah said, 鈥淏ecause of the support from my professors in my experiments during the year, I knew summer research would be a chance for me to grow even more not only as a student but also as a chemist.鈥 After graduation, she plans to apply to a Physician鈥檚 Assistant program and continue her studies in dermatology.

In addition to being a full-time student, Hannah is an RA (Resident Advisor), TA (Teaching Assistant), President of Pre-Health Society, President of Sigma Zeta, and a CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) at a local nursing home, typically working night shifts.

Hannah stands by Gardner Webb鈥檚 promise of 鈥淣ame over number.鈥 With our 13:1 student to faculty ratio, you鈥檙e more than a number or statistic on campus. Professors know you by name and believe in you. 鈥淲hen someone believes in you,鈥 she shared, 鈥測ou start to believe it in yourself, and that has made me feel so valued.鈥

Hannah describes herself as an open and conscientious person who usually starts her mornings by writing down her goals for the day. This helps her prioritize her academics and stay social while also working as a CNA, RA, and TA. 鈥淭he school year can be very challenging at times 鈥 but it is making me a better student who plans their time adequately and as a person who can handle a large workload,鈥 Hannah said.

Maybe you鈥檙e like Hannah and really centered around academics 鈥 or you enjoy using your knowledge to help others. No matter what drives you, you鈥檒l find your place here at 澳门六合彩高手 University. Go beyond the ordinary!

Skills Learned in GWU Political Science Classes Prepared Alumna for Law School Attorney Ivana Hughes 鈥13 Enjoys Helping People Reach Their Goals

Ivana Hughes, a 2013 澳门六合彩高手 University alumna, practices family law, criminal defense, civil litigation, and wills and estates. 鈥淚 love being in court,鈥 Hughes affirmed. 鈥淚 like to be around people and help them reach their end goals. I love what I do every day.鈥

Her dream to become a lawyer started when she was a young child. For her senior project in high school, she chose criminal law as her topic, and her mentor was an attorney. After spending time with the attorney, she was sure of her calling. The attorney suggested that she major in political science to prepare for law school.

While she was considering colleges, coaches came looking for her. A native of Augusta, Ga., Hughes ran track in high school and received several offers from colleges, including 澳门六合彩高手. She came for a visit and liked several things鈥攖he close-knit community, Baptist foundation, political science program, the small class sizes and its distance from her home. 鈥淚 knew I was going to get to know not just my teammates on a more intimate level, but also the students in general,鈥 Hughes reflected. 鈥淵ou also get to know your professors and they help you from your first day at GWU until you are a senior. They are with you.鈥

Preparing for her political science classes gave her the skills she needed for studying in law school, and she minored in English to improve her writing skills. She also had opportunities to participate in Model Arab League and Model United Nations, competitions that give students practice in public speaking and conducting research. 鈥淢y classes at GWU taught problem solving, critical reading and analyzing,鈥 assessed Hughes, who earned a law degree from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. 鈥淭he political science professors teach you how to be open-minded and tolerant of not just different political views and backgrounds, but tolerant of what鈥檚 going on in other countries. You learn the history and how it applies to today. A lot of the first year of law school is studying common law, and you have to know where you are coming from to how you got here.鈥

Besides being prepared for law school, Hughes is grateful for the friends she made at 澳门六合彩高手. 鈥淭hey are my best friends still today and I see them on a regular basis,鈥 she shared. 鈥淲hen you leave GWU, you will leave with lifelong friendships, an increased faith, and with what I would say, is a top-notch education.鈥

GWU Wants to Teach the Next Generation About Christ

鈥淭he professors reminded me that I must have an open mind, and I do not know everything. They, in many ways, have strengthened my faith in Christ. They have opened up my mind to a broader understanding of both the scriptures and God. They have challenged my beliefs, and in doing so, have made me a stronger believer. They have given me the tools to study, teach, and live out the scriptures.鈥

Cedric Starr of Shelby, N.C., came to 澳门六合彩高手 University ready to experience academic and spiritual growth. 鈥淚 wanted to more fully understand the sacred scriptures in order to better myself as a Christian and as a member of the community of faith,鈥 Starr elaborated.

After earning his Bachelor of Arts in philosophy and theology with a minor in classical languages from 澳门六合彩高手 in 2012, he entered the GWU School of Divinity to prepare for the ministry. 鈥淚 have always had a passion for theology and philosophy, because I love searching for the truth,鈥 affirmed Starr, who received his Master of Divinity in pastoral studies in 2017. 鈥淏efore I became a Christian I had a strong desire to understand the Bible and the truths about life itself. Old and New Testament fascinated me since I was a child. Now, I want to teach the next generation what it means to be a Christian, even though I know that I will also continue to learn as I dive deeper into the scriptures.鈥

He is grateful to the professors in the Department of Religious Studies and Philosophy who didn鈥檛 just give him answers, but kept asking questions. 鈥淭he professors reminded me that I must have an open mind, and I do not know everything,鈥 he concluded. 鈥淭hey, in many ways, have strengthened my faith in Christ. They have opened up my mind to a broader understanding of both the scriptures and God. They have challenged my beliefs, and in doing so, have made me a stronger believer. They have given me the tools to study, teach, and live out the scriptures.鈥

The professors who guided his educational journey were Dr. Paula Qualls, Dr. Don Berry, professor emeritus Dr. Ron Williams, Dr. Kent Blevins, Dr. Eddie Stepp and Dr. Perry Hildreth. 鈥淭hey were great mentors and have been there for me when I needed them the most,鈥 Starr assessed. 鈥淎bove all, Dr. Qualls has been the most influential during my entire 澳门六合彩高手 career and still is today. I am so blessed to know such an amazing spirit-led woman. She has become like my second mother.鈥

The opportunity to participate in student ministry groups also helped him grow in his faith and gain confidence in his leadership abilities. He attended the student-led worship service and served on a FOCUS team, a group of students who are involved in leading youth retreats locally and regionally. 鈥淢any of the people who come to 澳门六合彩高手 hold a strong passion for God and many of those people are close friends of mine,鈥 Starr shared. 鈥湴拿帕喜矢呤 is an institution of learning that prides itself on its passion in serving God and students. The faculty and staff of 澳门六合彩高手 are people who want to be there for the students and help them as much as possible. 澳门六合彩高手 is a school for those who truly want to serve others.鈥

澳门六合彩高手 School of Divinity Equips Grad to Serve People in His Hometown

鈥淧rofessors in the School of Divinity train individuals to attempt to see God in everything we do. I value my education, and I value the community togetherness. I am thankful that I was able to establish meaningful relationships with professors and fellow students. I see myself serving in ministry wherever God places me. I am excited to see what God has in store.鈥

In 2007, basketball standout Chris Gash graduated from 澳门六合彩高手 University with a degree in psychology. A leader on the court and a role model for his teammates, he headed to Orange, Calif., for a coaching job. A year later, however, his convictions brought him home to Kingstown, N.C.

鈥淚 felt the call to preach when I was 17. I moved back to be closer to family and to serve my community,鈥 Gash affirmed. 鈥淚 do not believe in individual success. Anyone, who has been, is now, or will be successful, does so because of the help of others. Kingstown sowed enormously into me. It was only right that I went back to say thanks through my services. I am grateful for many of the citizens in that great town for their loving support and the structure they provided in my life.鈥

Choosing to enroll in the GWU School of Divinity was a 鈥渘o-brainer,鈥 he assessed. 鈥淲hen I was at 澳门六合彩高手 for my undergraduate degree, my youth pastor was enrolled in the divinity program, and my pastor had just finished up. I would hear them speak highly of the program during church services.鈥

Chris Gash teaching Sunday School

Gash serves as pastor of New Zion Baptist Church in Spindale, N.C., and also works as community coordinator for Cleveland County Schools. He felt his studies would help in all areas of his life. 鈥淚 knew I needed to make sure I was properly educated,鈥 offered Gash, who completed his Master of Divinity degree in 2016. 鈥淭he divinity school offered a concentration in pastoral care and counseling. I felt that gaining additional biblical, theological, and historical knowledge would be a great asset. In addition, having the opportunity to go further in depth with my studies concerning relational skills would help in ministry.鈥

Through his classes, he learned how to help people in crisis situations. 鈥淢any times when emergencies take place we are limited as to what we can do,鈥 he explained. 鈥淪chool has taught me meaningful information on how to aid individuals who experience a crisis. In addition, I have learned not to be so judgmental of individuals and their situations. I believe we as a human race are so quick to stereotype and force our beliefs on others. God is bigger than our beliefs, bank accounts, influence, education, and family ties. We are of equal importance in God鈥檚 eyes.鈥

Gash also had an opportunity to explore different cultures when he took an intercultural studies class that included traveling to eight countries in Southeast Asia. 鈥淚 think it is important to understand that even in all of the differences we have as a human race, we are equally similar,鈥 he asserted. 鈥淭he trip allowed me to see different forms and styles of politics, religion, and social dynamics.鈥

While completing his studies in the School of Divinity, Gash worked and served in a variety of capacities鈥攆oster care worker, youth pastor, assistant pastor, coach, and town councilman. He is also a husband and a father of two.

鈥淢y classes have empowered me in every field,鈥 he affirmed.

Nursing faculty gives student confidence to reach her goals

鈥淚 always say that GWU changed my life. This University helped to write an important part of my story that I never dreamed possible. I am forever grateful for every person who was placed in my path while I was a student there.鈥

As a young nursing student, Dr. Allison Abernathy was unsuccessful at a local community college and started looking for another school. Her mother-in-law had heard positive comments about the School of Nursing at 澳门六合彩高手 University, so Abernathy contacted Dr. Shirley Toney, the dean in 1995. 鈥淒r. Toney reviewed my coursework and admitted me into the ASN (Associate of Science in Nursing) program immediately,鈥 she recalled. 鈥淪he believed in me, and I knew I was where God wanted me to be in order to finish my nursing degree in such a nurturing environment.鈥

That was 22 years ago, and Abernathy has since earned two more degrees from GWU鈥攃ompleting a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) in 2007 and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) in 2013. She is employed as a nursing instructor and the dean of Health & Human Services at Gaston College in Dallas, N.C. A resident of Cherryville, N.C., Abernathy has also been honored as a NC Great 100 Nurse, an award presented to Registered Nurses in North Carolina for their commitment to excellence.

鈥淚 always say that GWU changed my life,鈥 Abernathy shared. 鈥淭his University helped to write an important part of my story that I never dreamed possible. I am forever grateful for every person who was placed in my path while I was a student there. I love teaching students and giving back to this wonderful profession by igniting a passion in them through my past experiences.鈥

She treats her students with the same respect she was given from Toney and other GWU faculty members. 鈥淣ot only did I gain the knowledge I needed to be a successful nurse educator and dean, but I also learned things that were not in the curriculum, such as compassion, integrity and how to bring glory to God in the way I carry myself,鈥 Abernathy offered. 鈥淚 want all the students I come into contact with to feel like they matter and can do anything with the right support and encouragement.鈥

Abernathy especially appreciated the freedom to express her faith. 鈥淲e were allowed to pray before tests and during difficult times throughout the semester,鈥 she offered. 鈥淚 learned how to be bold in my faith and pray anywhere that I felt led to lift up a need to the Lord. The weekly Dimensions series provided a foundation for weekly Christian connections through speakers, music, etc. I also appreciated my professors sharing their faith through prayer and encouragement in class. I respected the way they communicated to my fellow students and me.鈥
